The 20 kg "Heavy" Hammer was developed for
testing on the running course of flexible pavements. Its hammer diameter is 13 cm meaning
that it is also tests through a larger zone than other Hammers. Its larger mass and
diameter means a reduction in output sensitivity enabling testing of materials harder than
100 CIV (of the Standard Hammer). Because of its weight, the Heavy Hammer has a guide tube
with wheels and a pull-handle to ease moving around the site. In the GTM style, the weight
of the guide tube is around 17 kg and the shipping case weighs around 18 kg for a combined
total shipping weight with the 20kg hammer of 55kg. Case dimensions are 38 cm by 49
cm by 86 cm. Standard drop-height for the Heavy Hammer is 30 cm. Notation for the output
is CIV/H when the 20 kg Hammer is dropped from its standard height of 30 cm.
